TIME TRIAL NEWS - 2016

Reports and photographs to follow as the season progresses

Cardiff 100 Miles RCC - 01.01.16 R10/9

In true Team Sky fashion I have been out on the course this morning.  Stiff headwind out moving to a cross/ head nearer the turn.  Make yourself as aerodynamic as possible and if you are riding a two- up, let the stronger rider do longer turns into the wind. Here's hoping we get someone on the podium in both the team and individual events! Steven M

Well done all riders - tough day - great effort.

Thanks Tony, Mark and John for the support, and Steve for the recce.

Thanks, as ever, to Norman for helping make these events happen  Steve C

It was cold, and a tad windy! with light rain at times.  Also the course was slightly longer than usual ! Lynne J

Acme Whs - 10.04.16 - R25/3H

First 25 of the year with you all understanding what the conditions were like.  16.5mph average for the first mile into the wind.  Then several 30mph plus PBs for the next section.  As the wind was swirling, I spent 80% of the ride not on the tri- bars.  The last 10 miles back was done in slow motion and 32 mins.  1hr 3 mins.

But the big news is that Steve Curry did it in 59:48 !  I can't state enough ( without swearing!) what an amazing ride that was in those conditions.  By way of comparison, Rod Hicks was a minute faster and he regularly knocks out 54minute rides on good days.  Keep it up Steve, I think some silverware will be coming your way by the end of the season.

Congratulations !  Just Amazing ! Steven M

Awesome! Andy H

Well Done Steve. Jason T

Steve - many thanks - I think I got the luck of the draw in going earlier as the wind picked up a lot later i.e. when you were riding. I followed you and Andy's prudent advice to start slowly and build gradually - the HR monitor helped, although It looked a bit naff wrapped around the handlebars - might have to buy a computer yet. Steve C

Well done Steve; I'm sure it was entirely down to your saddle and helmet. Chris G

Yesterday was the Bynea 30, set on probably the most attractive course in Wales, between Llandeilo and Carmarthen. Over 1,000ft of climbing ( it's a bit like riding 3 x club 10's back to back! ). Very technical and some rough surface ( my rear tyre was down to the canvas at the end). It was a celebrity deathmatch between myself and Mr Goodwin, who prevailed by 30 seconds and is now the club 30 champion!

Keiron won it - he's not doing much this year as he's just become a father.  'Not much' in his terms meant breaking the course record with 61 mins for 30 mins , an average of 29mph!! Steven M

Norman will post when he get a minute.
Rain stayed off for the event, but unfortunately caught riders who were taking 2 wheels home Teresa D

Ogmore Valley Wheelers - 24.04.16 - R25/3H

Once again, there are not enough 'thank yous' to thank everyone for their help at the Carl Roach event today.

So here is a big one instead

THANK YOU

The team work in the Ogmore Valley Wheelers is second to none.  We always put on a good event, and this year was no exception. Teresa D

What a Team! Flawless performance once again by the OVW volunteers giving their time to make this event so much successful. Thank you Teresa, your organisation of the event was brilliant and we had some great feedback from the riders Ceri B

Ditto. Stephen L

Thanks again to everyone who put in a great effort to run an outstanding event yesterday.  Personally, I really enjoyed riding it and even more enjoyed hearing all the positive comments about how good the event was from other riders.
Many Thanks, Neil (Rhys) P

Some really positive comments from riders.

Taken from riders who have emailed me personally and from the CTT site.
Certainly gives me a sense of satisfaction to know the event went well from a rider's perspective and that the OVW can pull together to give them an excellent experience

Thanks for organising the time trial at the weekend. It was a really friendly and well run event with great marshalling.

I just wanted to say that I always come away from an OVW event thinking what a lovely bunch of people you all are - and how well run everything is.

Thank you for another great event! A real credit to the club.

Thanks for putting on a great event yesterday. I improved my pb so was especially pleased.

Thanks for organising a great event yesterday, and thanks for the sunshine!

Thanks for your efforts yesterday, I love going down to that course.

Thanks Teresa and the club for running a faultless event. Now that's the way to do it.

A very big thanks to Ogmore Valley Wheelers and the Timekeepers for a super event today.

Well organised, well marshalled, excellent signage and last but by no means least the super cwtches back at HQ from the Ogmore Valley lady who defrosted me. I am very, very grateful, and finally warm! A heartfelt Thanks.

Did I mention it was cold? It was cold. I want the 3kgs back that I lost over winter *heads to cake shop*!

Thank you very much for everything.  The event was brilliant! One of the most organised iv done so far.

Many thanks for organising such a well-run TT at the weekend. It is much appreciated.

Thank you and all your helpers for a really well run event.

My cwtches are red hot! Ceri B

Teresa - take a bow Steve C

Thanks for organising Teresa. It was a great day out on the bike, and good fun marshalling the course afterwards. Paul N

NO 2 - MID WEEK - 5TH MAY 2016

Good turnout tonight and great win for Joe Beech with

a PB of 21:21! Steven M

Just my best on that course, I've done 20:25 on R10/17.

Fastest here until now has been a 21:38 last year. This

was my first 10 and my second time trial of the year so

was surprised to go well! Joe B

Well done Joe.

First time in shorts this year for me.

I'm beginning to regret the few seconds I spent sitting

up and shouting at Andy Dodgy Knees that he had

missed the turn… Chris G

I regret the fact that I pulled over and had a cuppa at

the turn !!!!!.... :o

Nice one Chris !!! Mark N

So after my first TT my first purchase will be some clip

on tri bars. Anyone got any recommendations or any for

sale?  Nick L

Sorry Chris

I can confirm that Chris would have been a fair bit

quicker without his Good Samaritan act, think I would h

ave ended up in Barry otherwise

I wonder how much time lost on my detour?

I'll be aiming for a sub-27 maybe next week!? Andy S

The reserve course which was a shame as we had a easterly wind?

https://www.velouk.net/2016/05/09/result-cc-blaenau-gwent-50/

Only myself and Neil Poulton in this.

Nearly went home as I drove through torrential rain to get there. Was dryish by the time I started , only got rained on once which misted my visor up nicely ; had to stop to hide it in the bushes! Chris G

Good ride Chris, I had a few Visor related issues too!! I was pretty lucky with the conditions during my ride. Was actually quite lucky to be on the start line this week, I had a throat infection over the bank holiday weekend and only just felt good enough to race...one day earlier and I couldn't have done it!!

Hopefully be back up to full steam for the 10 on Saturday :-) Neil P

Terrible weather (I think only rider number 1 got round in the dry ::)). Got my start time wrong and stood for 10 minutes in the rain ;was shivering at the start. There were a few riders missed their start time completely and arrived late while I was there.

It was a harsh introduction into the world of endurance cycling.  A lot of the riders where Ironman triathletes. By way of comparison, David Brice from the Bynea who did 21:26 on the Thursday night did 4hrs 33 mins, so relatively I improved against him!

I should have mentioned the scenery was breathtaking, whilst riding uphill I had a lot of time to enjoy it! Seven M

Well good luck Andy then! In his interesting introduction Robin talks about local clubs promoting their own open 12's in the 1920's such as the Acme and Glamorgan Road Club. GRC was my Mum and Dad's club but even they weren't old enough to have ridden 12's in the 1920's! Tom B

Andy abandoned after 11 hrs with 190 miles completed. Cold, wet and windy and in pain with a bad shoulder.

That's a heroic ride in my opinion!  Steven M

Agreed-well done Andy-are the results up? Tom B

Great ride, Andy - Hope you have taken the day off tomorrow Teresa D

Well done Andy, the weather didn't look too good heading in to the afternoon so that was a great effort. Jason T

Results normally take a little longer to process, after the 12!

Thanks guys! Something in me says should've used the extra hour to do another lap of the finishing circuit to get to 200 but a warm cuppa was calling! Andy H

Could have done both with all that time And  ;)  Seriously great effort. Hope the shoulder is ok Rob J

Cheers, its nothing serious, ironically doesn't seem to bother me swimming but trying to stay in TT position was a real pain!

results show me at 175.55 something of a discrepancy with Garmin and strava!! Even allowing for the 5 miles in the car before I stopped my watch. Also have Garmin 500 that recorded 190, I shall complain.........not really

winner Danny Grieves 294.14! Andy H

Either way good ride on the day Andy. That's a new Welsh Comp Record by about 7 miles Tom B

NO 12 - MID WEEK - 14TH JULY 2016

We had a lovely sunny evening, with a strong westerly wind.   Riders flew out

to the turn but struggled on the return leg.  Times recorded were very good in

these conditions, but spare a thought for Neil who lost 40 seconds due to a

rear wheel pulling over - twice!   It was nice to welcome back Ross after a spell

off, and well done Kari with your "25".

Thanks again to Mary, Allan, Tim and Andy for your help in this promotion.

MID WEEK - 4TH AUGUST 2016 - HANDICAP EVENT

Will Parkhouse would have been delighted with such a close fought contest in his Memorial event,

well done everybody!

On a dry but very windy evening, the times recorded were good, and Richard's win was well deserved

and shows he's keeping his good form.    The weekly battle between Chris and Steve was once more

very close.  It was so nice that Keith and Steven could join in the contest on the tandem.

Thanks to Teresa and Stephen for their help this evening.

My apologies to Steve Curry and Richard Bowmer for giving the wrong handicap times at the finish,

My mathematics let me down! Norman J

Well done all on a gusty evening.

Particularly well done to Richard - I think you have made improvements each mid week you have

ridden. Teresa D

Well done to Norman for some quality handicapping to make it so close!  Steven M

Excellent handicapping, Norman and well done Richard Andy H

Not often the slowest rider on the night wins!  :) Richard B

Well done Richard; it shows how much you have improved with all that hard work. Chris G

Some strong rides in gusty conditions.  We made 20 seconds on TS to the turn and he took 2 minutes out of us on the way back! Steven M

My return leg (into wind) speed is down to a combination of newly shaved legs and covered arms - Steve and Keith were evidently too hairy!

Well done Rich and thanks as ever to our fabulous 'events team'.  Steve C

NO 16- MID WEEK - 11TH AUGUST 2016

It was a dry, cloudy, overcast and windy evening

for this Club event. Although short on entry numbers,

we had a quality contest.    Mark Rosser produced a

great ride to win on the night, while the battle between

Chris Goodwin and Steve Curry resulted again in a

close finish.   We had Mid-Week events season's

best rides for Richard Bowmer, Mark Nott, Mark Rosser

and Dave Walters - Well done all of you.   Steven and

Keith again rode a great mid"24" even in these

windy conditions.

My thanks to Stephen Landeg for all his help this

evening, and I hope his pushing- off arm recovers

before Sunday's Welsh Championship"10".

Best wishes to Teresa Deeley who was absent due to

illness - we all hope you recover very soon. Norman J

The course is faster with a westerly wind, but not as

strong as last night.  Good set of results ! Steven M

NO 17- MID WEEK - 18TH AUGUST 2016

For weather, this was the best night of the year.

Unfortunately, only six

competitors signed-on to ride.   Times were good with

Nick and Will recording seasons' best mid-week rides,

and the tandem ride by Keith and Steven  was also

their fastest of the season.   Terry was returning

to competition after his annual holiday and was quite

pleased with his effort.   David Turner was a  "come

and try it" entrant and aquitted himself wel for a first

attempt (without toe clips !) with his 34 - 08.

Well done everone!

My thanks again to stalwarts Mary and Allan Marks,

and Andy Harries for their help with tonights' promotion.

Next week the "10" is also a "Ride what you like" event, and the last but one

mid-week event of the season.

Thanks to Norman and the support team.

I'd always thought a tailwind out is best for this course but it certainly is not the case for the tandem! Steven M

Well that was an eventful morning!!

Warm-up and started all ok...then at the bottom of the big hill got a puncture!! Looking at a couple of hours to walk back so decided to try my hand at hitch hiking...very successful thanks to Brian and his van. Repaired said puncture and begged for a second start time, which the very graciously gave me...set off again and managed a PB :-) 55:37...what a relief!!

Hope everyone else got around ok :-) Neil P

Great effort Neil! Mark P

Great result, in more than one way! Andy H

Several good results there Neil.   PB   Puncture repair   Lift back

Getting another start. I remember one rider's race lasted 400yds before a mare of a mechanical. I gave her a lift back to her car and she swapped wheels and asked for another start and was promptly refused. She let a few words off at the start timekeeper and stopped when he suggested that the chances of her riding a S Wales DC event would be close to nil if she kept it up. It's always beneficial to be polite to those who keep our sport going. Stephen L

I was really lucky, will be carrying a puncture repair kit from now on too!! lesson well and truly learned!

well done on your ride, Neil P

New 25 record.  I believe the previous was 44.20 Teresa D

He's been around for a while then - I think he won the Betty Pharoah elite race with a solo win about 7 years ago...but until he smashed the 10 record the other day I never really heard of him as a time triallist! Well he broke Welsh Competition record(25)a month or 2 ago Rob(Teresa will correct me if I'm wrong!) Tom B

Great turnout today and brill to see so much support as well, everyone pushing each other

right to the line. Nick and Will who joined us from Monmouthshire Wheelers were really impressed

with the whole thing so kudos goes to all the organisers who put on the event, thank you Nick L

Nick, I guess that is the 'before' picture, you look way too comfortable  ;)

A very relaxed affair, with lovely sunshine.  Looking forward to next year already Teresa D

kind of expression it was giving out! Thanks for putting it on Teresa et al Nick L
