Real Team - 12th April 2015 - R25/3H

Most of you will have noticed the wind today and for those of us riding the 25 it was troublesome.  I rode the first 15 miles to the turn on the drops as I did not trust myself on the tri bars in the gusts.  At one point it slowed me to 14mph when I was going down the bank?  Got to the turn with an average of 21.5mph and way too much to do on the way back despite doing 20mins 32 seconds for the final uphill 10 miles!

1:02:52, my slowest for a while.  Mark Nott did an '0' and Mark Rosser a '59'.  Kieron won it with a '49' - amazing… Steve M

Ogmore Valley Wheelers - 26th April 2015 - Carl Roach Memorial 25 mile TT

There are not enough 'thank yous' to thank everyone for their help at the Carl Roach event today.

So here is a big one instead

THANK YOU

Proud to belong to an excellent club  8) Teresa D

..and well done to you. Great organisation was the keystone to the success of today. Steven M

..and Keiron's time was the fastest in the UK this year.. Steven M

Having spoken to Cycling Weekly, Kieron is in the top ten fastest riders of this year - twice.

1st fastest for our event with 47.19 and 8th fastest for the Realteam event with 49.57.

Current 2nd place holder is Matt Bottril with 47.28  Teresa D

Hi Everyone, can I first and foremost thank Teresa for her organisation of the Carl Roach TT on Sunday, the work she put into it was phenomenal and it ran with no hiccups, well apart from the 100+ tonne lorry, pusher lorry, metal plates etc - all sent to try us but as it worked out, better for the riders. We had loads of riders come up to us after the race and declare their intention to ride again next year and that it was one of the best events they ride in - fantastic feedback

Great thank you also to the rest of the team who gave up their Sunday and turned up en masse to help, especially the catering team for keeping everyone fed and hydrated, the guys out in the cold on roundabouts/junctions/bridges and the number crunchers at the beginning ("if you haven't signed, you are not riding" lol), and at the end who made sense of the figures and created the magic Scores on the Doors - quite literally!.

To the pre race scouts who have patrolled the course on a number of occasions in order to provide the safest, most challenging and exciting rider possible for the riders.

It all goes to show that .....................Team Work Makes the Dream Work! Ceri B

Well done to all,in particular the organisers,I certainly enjoyed my morning at the roundabout, and it would seem we all did.The classic car rally was a great bonus!

Special mention must go to rider no.57 from Holmfirth,I chatted to him for sometime early on-he seems to have a sensible head on him,and good legs,53.51 in 15th place...aged 15

Good luck for the future and with your GCSEs Nathan

One to watch me thinks! Andy S

A great race and it was great to be part of it.               Only an hour delay too.            I think the Curse of Carl must be wearing off. Stephen L

Thanks to all who helped so myself and others could ride. I heard only great feedback.    It was my first 25 tt as well; hope the others are as well run. Chris G

Some really lovely and positive feedback from Chris Massey - Cwmcarn Paragon RC

I just wanted to extend my thanks to the club and it's officials and all those that helped out yesterday for the Carl Roach 25M TT.

One of the best marshalled events I have ever ridden in, and one of the best catered for also.     The food on offer after the event was brilliant!

The setup and final times coming in was also great too.

Full credit to you all - an amazing day!   Thanks so much for making it a thoroughly enjoyable morning.   Brilliant guys! Keep up the good work and high standards.

Another message  - Les was kind enough to get in touch with me when the HUGE lorry was ready to depart.

Thank you very much for organising the event, having done a few open events myself I know how stressful it can be and how much hard work goes into it!

See you next year :)

A message from Allan Renyard, Guernsey Velo Club

Thanks for the prompt results and a well organised event (as usual).

Hopefully my next visit to the valleys will be a bit warmer.

I did enjoy both my rides (did the Bath CC event the previous day), so a most enjoyable couple of days

A lovely message from Stephen Cook - Lindsey Road CC

Been busy since  Sunday but wanted to thank you and your team for a fantastic event again from the people in the HQ to all the marshals and helpers .Everybody was so friendly and the delayed start even added to the day   for me as I was able to sit in the HQ and sit and have a cup of coffee talking about cycling and finding out more about the Ogmore club. It was a great day and I'm glad the weather stayed fine for you.I enjoyed last year even though the  course had to be shortened and am really glad I came back again .

Again thank you for a great day and I hope to see you next year

Nigel is a first time organiser and appreciates the efforts that go on behind the scenes - Nigel Jones, Gloucester City CC

I would just like to pass on my sincere thanks to yourself and all the volunteers & helpers from Ogmore Valley Wheelers who turned up early Sunday morning to make what was a very successful day.

I thought the course was marshalled brilliantly and the food and hospitality in the hall & kitchen was fantastic.

It’s an awful lot of hard work, but really appreciated by myself and all the riders I hope, thank you.

MID WEEK - 30TH APRIL 2015

Well here we go again.  ;D. The racing season is with us once again. Weather bright and sunny, cool and windy. Very unusual for the first event. A little surprised we did not have more contenders.

Well done to the newbies who said they enjoyed. See you all again next week. Same time,

same place.

Just to let you all know, Joe Beech set a new club record in the Ogmore event at the weekend.

Apologies for lateness in posting results. But they were well worth the wait.

Teresa, missed you at the event. Hope you're on your way to a good recovery.

Just a reminder. Next weeks event is the dedicated Arthur Hopkin Memorial 2 up.

At least one rider MUST be a vet. This was highly fought over last year by Sian Harris

and Myself. So here's hoping for a much larger field this year. Choose your partner well.

Amazing ride. Surely that's a course record? That's quite a bit faster than he did the Welsh Champs R25/3L (or was it H) the previous week on a faster course in calmer conditions! Rob J

Broke Stu Dodds 4 yr old record by 1 47. Ron B

Wow. I predict he'll win the nationals next year but he's going to be knocking on the door this year. Seems to ride very well in the wind so maybe a blustery day will help his chances against the postman! Rob J

MID WEEK - 14TH MAY 2015

The Arthur Hopkin 2 up memorial event.

How lovely to be home in the warmth. Those of you who rode the event tonight will know what

I mean. It was freeeezing.

We Had four teams entered, all of whom shivered around the start line wondering how many

layers of clothes they should wear without affecting the slip stream too much. Serious decisions

to be made. In the end keeping warm won out over super fast times. It was too damn windy

anyway. .

Well done to all who rode, didn't turn out to be a bad night for it, especially after the weather earlier in the day.

Thanks to Lynne, Norman and Tim Andy H

Must say another excellent night, pitty there was only four teams out. A bit windy but I think the 25ers had the best time tonight. Thanks to Norman Lynne and Tim for a most enjoyable night. Jon S

Great night tonight despite the weather today, good to get back on the 10 mile course and to see Lynne and Norman, thanks for timing and Tim pushing off also thanks to my old mate Mark Machine Nott for dragging me round and getting a pb  :), I must have done his head in as the nutter did it again on his own and did a 23min mad !!!, .See you all again next week. Kevin R

+1 on the thanks to Lynne, Norman, & Tim. I think they had the worst of it standing out there in conditions most politely described as poor; although not quite as bad as earlier in the day - at least it stayed dry. Terry A

+2 on the thanks to all who looked after us having some fun   :)  Tony M

Thank you to Lynne, Norman and Tim.....it was a tad cold !!!          Well done to Kev,you worked hard out there and I'm sure you will improve as the season unfolds.         Oh yes and not to mention, great result for Terry and Tony on winning the event.....well done gents!!! Mark N

Did anyone enjoy anything about that godforsaken event...genuinely has made me want to sell my TT bike! Rob J

There will be a glut of tt bikes for sale if the post ride Hardwick lay-by de brief is anything to go by.

It was a horrible experience for all. Chris G

I was expecting it to be really fast out but I wasn't. Consequently I thought it would be not too slow back...but I was! Thoroughly demoralising ride. Rob J

When was a tt ever easy, if it was you were not working hard enough, bit like me really. Ron B

I didn't mention easy Ron...only fast and slow. Never easy. Even parking was hard work at this one!  Rob J

Did you get your free ride on the Fair when you handed your number in? Ron B

No I settled for blackcurrant squash after a 20 mile warmdown loop to crickhowelll one side of the river and back the other...That was far more rewarding than the TT! Rob J

MID WEEK - 21ST MAY 2015

Weather was not as cold as last week, to start with. Still sun was shining, but that wind

was still there.

Help will be needed next week. I am unable to attend as are Allan and Mary. Norman has a

meeting to attend in Cardiff. He will take everything with him and do his utmost to be there,

but can make no promises. Therefore it is important for the event to go ahead that preparation

is made. Cheers.

Bynea CC - 25th May 2015 - R25/4

Went and rode the Bynea 25 today. It bears out what Rob Jones has said elsewhere.

A fab gently rolling course with very little traffic and a nice HQ for a change / cake selection to rival cafe velo 30 riders started. In comparison to next Sundays r25/3? where I didn't get in. Which is a shame as I was hoping to use today to help me towards next weekend.

It only took an hour to get there (2hours back due to misery traffic) which is the same as getting to Aberdare.

Also Kieron Davies showed that you can be talented and a nice guy as he was happy to chat with anyone about bikes / watts / coaching and gave a cheerful come on boys as he went past like a bullet.

Hopefully the results have attached as planned if you are interested.

AND I met someone else who has taken a wrong turning in a TT!!! Chris G

Well done Chris and good report but you can't get out of it that easily!Lots of people have gone off course in a TT(and some of them OVW at the time)have subsequently thrown their bike and other things around HQ when they realised what happened-thinking they'd set a PB- but NO-ONE has EVER gone off course in a HILL-CLIMB!!! Tom B

Nice one Tom....if I had done what Chris did I'd have lied that the strava KOM was more important to me than the competition...about the only thing I can think of to get away with that! Mind you how many hill climb courses have a turn!?!

Top 10 Chris - well done. I went to the same place yesterday and it took about an hour and a quarter both ways from Cardiff...but then Rhigos I can get to in 40 mins, so at least it compares well in that respect.  Rob J

I know I'll never live that down Tom...It does make me smile though. Chris G

OMG I've just seen Kieron's time!

Even though he does something ridiculous every single ride, I still do this  :o every time I see his latest time!  Rob J

Another PB for me by 1 second. Just goes to show that

marginal gains do work; my wife bought me a pair of aero

gloves for my birthday!! Perhaps balanced by my overshoe

zip undoing . And that with a dead stop at the roundabout

which beats last weeks chain off incident.   Not sure what

others thought; I thought it would be an easy

fast night with a tailwind back seemed tougher than

usual? Chris G

Yeah slow night - I felt fast and lost 1min 4sec over last week - thus I rode off in a huff 😭Chris R

I also rode off in a huff (1.5 mins slower than last time  :-[ ) - just probably did a better job of hiding it .... Haha Terry A

That course is unusual. I think it is faster with a southwesterly breeze than with no wind at all. The breeze from behind helps you over the steep stuff at the beginning and enables you to keep momentum after to the turn. Then on the way back you get a bit of shelter from the hedges.  Rob J

PTW CC - 18th June 2015 - 25/3H  -  4up TT

Good night for it tonight and for the first time in ages a full field with no DNs's !   Well done to the 'B' team for getting under the hour on their first TTT. We recorded 52:39, which was 9 seconds slower than last year but still fast enough to win £80 for the fastest Vets team. Great effort by Mark Rosser and Mark Nott (slow puncture in the last 7 miles) who towed Richard Beech and myself around… Steven M

...and still had enough strength to crush my hand at the end!! ;D Davey C

Always saves a bit for that :D Rob J

Great ride tonight with Mark R, Steven and Richard.

Had a slow puncture at the turn but thought....I`m going to keep going until either myself or the bike blows up but the tyre held and we had a great time!!!

Thanks gents...really enjoyed it, cant wait until next year???...that's 2 years on the bounce.   Can we make it a hat trick next year???    Sorry Davey....I just got excited when I saw you !!! Lol.    and of course well done to Will, Mark P,Harpo and Terry for going well under the hour !!! great ride guys.

and Rob I cant wait to see you again....you know what's coming don't you ??? Lol Mark N

WCA - 21st June 2015 - 12hour

Abandoned after 6 hours (118 miles), Mark and Steve still going when I left and Joe Beech also seeming to be going well.

Combination of knee pain, (which I didn't fancy carrying for 6 hours) and a lack of mental fortitude when they had to change the course, means I'm home with my feet up and a cold cider 6 hours earlier than planned.

There were roadworks and 3 way lights in Usk, so after one loop of Usk/Raglan circuit they had to send us out on the road to Hereford and back, (repeatedly for those still going) , having to drop the loop in the lanes to Usk and Raglan, which was much better riding!

The section up to Hereford was hard going with the wind seeming to be against in both directions and too much traffic, psychologically it 'did my head in' so now have 12 months to prepare for the next 12 hour!   ;D  Andy H

Hard luck Andy-that's a much harder loop as you don't need me to confirm! Tom B

Only 118 miles then Andy!! Still a big ride. Maybe you should of had a break, may or may not of helped physically and/ or mentally.  Rob J

Possibly Rob, think the main thing was being under prepared, physically and mentally.    No rides over 90 miles this year, compared to 4 or 5 last year and wasn't that focused.     'Banked it' as a decent training ride! Andy H

Unlike you to be unprepared Andy. I'd want to have done a couple of 100s at TT pace and some longer steady rides too. Don't think I could have done 118 or 6 hours myself today. The wind was pretty relentless and my 4 hours in saddle today felt more like 6+

The Levels were were almost unbearable at end of the ride! Rob J

I wouldn't have fancied that wind for anything over five hours or so, I think you made the right decision to go with the cider and you'll save the legs for next sunday. Jason T

Haven't seen the result yet but Joe won it with 271.2-good job we're his 2nd claim now or J-P would have lost his club record.Hard to see anyone beating him for the BAR? Tom B

Outstanding. Don't know where Joe gets his talent from  ;)           Look forward to hearing about Steve and Mark… Rob J

Joe looked smooth as well as fast every time he lapped me.           But winners usually do look smooth and fast.

I think (and hope) I got to the magic 200 but that depends on the final calculations.

I learned a huge amount about bike prep, sustaining fluid and calories, mind games and not to turn up to an event like this with tennis elbow.

Oh, and not to wait until I'm on the wrong side of 60 to enter a 12.

I know that Mark M finished and did quite a few more miles than I did.

He actually looked as though he was enjoying himself.

Shame about Andy pulling stumps early but if I had to make that trip up to Hereford again, I would have joined him.

I don't think my mind games work that well.

2016?.......the jury is out! _Stephen L

Well done Steve, hope you make the 200 mark.      If not, you'll HAVE to go again in '16! Andy H

I think it was only me and Andy Storrie and Joe Beech ( second - well done).

Some clown in an audi tt shaved my leg undertook a lorry and nearly took out the guy in front of me as he squeezed on the inside of the lorry.

The feeling was after most guys were about 30 seconds slower than usual / they would expect.

Strong headwind to the turn.

VERY VERY hot. Chris G

Emergency course rolling to start and quite a few turns made it a tough one.

A brutal day wind wise as evidenced by the times compared to PB's. I was quite pleased to equal mine.

National Championship - 5th July 2015 - R100/8A

Nice weather for our riders today, some of the late starters caught the storm and some even stopped because it was soooo bad. Ron B

Ron,    Many thanks for supporting us today. The early start meant we had finished before the storm hit but it was windy for the last few miles…

That completes the set for me, I've ridden the National 10,25,50 and 100.  No desire whatsoever to do the 12 and the 24! Steven M

Yes, thanks Ron, made life a lot easier having our own 'feed' station. Andy H

Very wet conditions last night with little wind, avoiding the wet steel manholes on the way up to the first turn and general bad visibility was a problem. Chris that visor will come off your helmet to improve visibility in the wet, someone has the knowhow. Ron B

I can't successfully wear a visor or glasses in TT in any conditions. Rain or sweat always gets on inside of lenses and impedes my vision. Must be the shape of my head! Rob J

es I hope so I couldn't see a thing except by angling my head to peer through the nose gap so lost a lot of time on the corners and the turns as I didn't want to come off.

2330, went away feeling i should have done better as was still fresh at the end.

Got held up on the a465 for 30 minutes on the way home. Chris G

Arrived at HQ 8.00 in the sort of torrential rain only Wales can deliver. It did cross my mind to go home but stuck around and the sun came out; the roads dried up as well. Less favourable wind to the turn and more favourable on the way back without being a headwind / tailwind situation. 58.45 for me which is a PB.

And for once didn't have to use the brakes at all or stop at roundabouts / overtake tractors etc! Still didn't fancy the steepest part of the bank on the bars as there was a tasty side wind at this point. Don't know how the others went as I'm not quick enough for the main event so went off first. Chris G

Well done Chris! The first of many I'm sure… Steven M

I calculate that the Steven / Keith pairing bettered their tandem 10 time by a whole 1min 1 sec - Hope I am right

Very well done    :D Teresa D

Check out Ron's time...surely a recent day (last 10 years) pb Ron? Well done. Rob J

Ron certainly did well - A minute and some off his last time on that course in 2012 (Assuming the CTT site is correct) Teresa D

Teresa,     A 40 second improvement but as our 10 course is short, I suspect 1 min 10 is more appropriate,!

Ron gets ride of the day IMO.. Steven M

Lost 10 minutes at the start, number 75 turned up late and was on the line ready to go before they spotted he was not number 78. 78 was missing and number 75's watch was wrong. They managed to get him off the line with my 10 seconds count down already going. Moral of the story always check that your time piece is correct and keep an eye on riders with a lower number warming up and approaching the start. Good ride all the same, if a little cold, one juvenile arrived at the start 20 minutes early, last year he was still warming up in St M's with 15 minutes to go but they did take him to the start in a car. Lots of chat at HQ about our tandem crew, well done to you both. Ron B

Big field for this event with some of the countries top riders taking part, weather does not look too good, but same for everyone. Steven is trying for number "99" under the hour, good luck, there's no rush, plenty of riders a little older than you. Ron B

That may be true but I'm getting slower with age!  Don't mind the rain ( apart from the fact that I have to take it easy on the roundabouts on my 19m slick tubulars!), but need the wind in the right direction.. Steven M

57:15   -   Ride number 99! Steven M

Looking at the CTT site, conditions weren't that great but quite a few PBs reported Teresa D

Overnight my time has slipped to 57:19!   I finished third from last and every rider was inside the hour!

Hayley Simmonds must have been close to the women's competition record… Steven M

Nice ride Steven!  Is this your fastest this season?  For your information - The Womens Competition record ( On this course) is 50-01 by Julia Shaw in 2011.  Well done, Norman.

Need to work on poker face Steven, looks like you are trying hard in those pics! Rob J

Conditions were better than they appeared during the warm-up.  It was quite windy especially on the return leg.  These were good results, but terry was so disappointed to have missed a " 23" by just 2 secs! N James

Looks like a first Open TT for Terry and Neil.  Well done both on excellent times.  Both very close to a minute faster than the midweek 10.

Mark's one outing of the year was extremely close to last years time.  Definitely got to come along to the mid weeks next year.

It was a warm, sunny day with a south westerly light wind,i.e.headwind out and a less helpful tailwind back. It was nice and warm with light traffic.  Bowen's was a good ride on the day,as was Tim's only "Open" event this season, but mine less so!

This was the last "Open" 10mile T.T. of the season in South Wales. N James

Well done No. Excellent time and great plus. Is this your seasons best or a pb ?

I think Norman, you said you had not had a plus this year ? I thought you would be pleased with this !

As for me it is my first and last Open TT and therefore my seasons best. I hope this now qualifies me for some kind of prize at the Annual Dinner. It's always nice to take something away. I hope I can keep my interest into next season too. Tim RNot yet surely Tim, it doesn't seems like long since you were a Pacer (or fast group as it may have been called then)! when they came back down.

Some riders competing in their first event and some times from last year well and truly beaten.

Looking forward to seeing everyone's time when Norman has a chance to put them on here. Teresa D

Thanks to Timekeepers Teresa Deeley and Norman James

and to Starter Richard Bowmer and Number Checker Jason Turvey.

Most of all thanks to you all for such a brilliant turn-out - you made it a day to remember. Norman J

Thanks Teresa and Norman, and anyone else involved in organising. That was my first club hill

climb, and my only official TT this year. Despite not climbing quite as well I'd hoped to, I found

it a really enjoyable event. I'll be back next year, hopefully with 5 more Watts and 5 less

kilograms  ;) Allan W

Big thanks to Norman & Teresa for organising the climb today.

If only my climb had been as efficient as your organisation...! Craig M
